Stakes success for Mount Nelson and Newsells homebreds

It was an extremely successful day for Newsells bred horses on Saturday 27th August, headed up by Lightning Spear winning the Group 2 Celebration Mile at Goodwood, and Berkshire and Majeed finishing first and second in the Listed Sri Lanka August Stakes at Windsor, both of whom are by the Newsells sire Mount Nelson.

Berkshire made all and whilst headed in the last 50 yards by Majeed he gamely fought back to hold on by a short head for trainer Paul Cole and owner HRH Sultan Ahmad Shah. He may now be aimed at the Arc trial at Newbury.

Mount Nelson is probably the most underrated stallion in Great Britain.  In 2016 alone, he has also produced Highlands Queen, who won the Group 2 Shadwell Prix de Pomone and Group 3 Prix Cleopatre; Boscaccio landed the Group 2 Oppenheim Union Rennen and Listed Derby Trial at Hannover; Weltmacht and Strawberry Martini were first and second in the Listed Hamburger Stuten-Cup; Elbereth won the Nottinghamshire Oaks; and Maleficient Queen was victorious in the Listed Rothesay Stakes.

As well as six Group or Stakes winners this year Mount Nelson has sired seven Group or Stakes performers, and is a top 10 sire by European Stakes winners, level with Invincibile Spirit, Lope de Vega, Teofilo and War Front.
